The problem began when the governor proposed a 10 percent budget cut in 2009.

John Aycock, Vacaville Superintendent, called the proposal “unfeasible”. “For now, layoffs seem unlikely, but parents and teachers should know that it could be a possibility”, Aycock said.

“Presentations given to staff and parents were in order for people to begin to understand what the governor is expecting,” Aycock said. “The Vacaville school district is in a better situation than other districts.”

Aycock said that the need for layoffs has not been decided.

The district had asked teachers for early notification if they’re going to retire or leave the district. Aycock said the district will pay the teachers $1,000 if teachers notify the district in February that they’ll be leaving at the end of the school year.

Ayock added that as of Thursday, 12 employees have submitted their notice.
