Problem #2: If the sum of the sides of a right triangle is 17 inches and the hypotenuse is 13 inches, find the two sides.

Let “a” and “b” be the shorter sides, the sum is:
a + b = 17

Solve for a (you could solve for b as well):
a = 17 - b

This gives us formulas for each of the three sides of the right triangle:
a = 17 – b
b = b
c = 13

We can now plug these into the Pythagorean Theorem and solve:

the Pythagorean Theorem for the CSET
