For almost 30 years, the American Federation of Teachers has been collecting teacher salaries by state. You can visit the AFT at http://www.aft.org/

Keep in mind that the teacher salaries by state chart below does not mean that Connecticut and California have the highest paying teaching jobs. The average salary in California being higher than most other states simply means that California has a higher percentage of teachers who have taught for many years. A better measure of what new teachers are being paid is by looking at the SARC report. Where this chart really comes in handy is if you want to look at the longer term picture in terms of earnings. If you want to find the state where you have the best odds of being paid the most over a 15 year period, then this chart is perfect for that.
