California and Virginia have a reciprocity agreement in place which means your California teacher certification is honored in Virginia (and a Virginia teacher certification is honored in California).
The average teacher salary in Virginia is about $45,377 or $12,000 a year less than California; however, the cost of living is much lower in Virginia than in California. For example, in Virginia you can buy a nice home for $125,000; An equivalent home in California costs about $250,000.
Teach Virginia Shortage
The Teach Virginia website states that Virginia has a serious teacher shortage problem. This is a gold mine for anyone with a California teaching credential. You can land a teaching job in Virginia very easily. In Virginia, critical shortages exist in all areas of teaching, but especially in math, special education, science and career technical.
The Virginia Department of Education has identified the following areas for which they really need teachers.
1. Special Education (speech and language disorders; learning disabilities; emotional distrubance; severe disabilities; early childhood special education; hearing impairment; mental retardation; visual impairment)
2. Mathematics; 6-12 and Algebra I add-on endorsement
3. Career and Technical Education (business education; family and consumer sciences; trade and industrial education; technology education)
4. Elementary Education, preK-6
5. Foreign Language (Spanish, preK-12; French, preK-12)
6. Middle School, 6-8
7. Reading Specialist (Graduate Level)
8. Earth Science
