particularly in the eastern counties. Thurston County (made up entirely of the Omaha and Winnebago reservations) has a Native American majority.
Rural Flight
Eighty-nine percent of the cities in Nebraska have fewer than 3,000 people.
Fifty-three of Nebraska’s 93 counties reported declining populations between 1990 and 2000, ranging from a 0.06% loss (Frontier County) to a 17.04% loss (Hitchcock County). While many areas of the state continue to suffer, others have experienced substantial growth. This rural flight has had an impact on schools with many schools needing to consolidate in order to survive.
I’m still at a loss for why so many people want to teach in Nebraska but it is what it is. Of course it shouldn’t be a surprise that a semi-city slicker like myself doesn’t get it.
