A few more thoughts on fractions for teacher candidates studying for the CSET Multiple Subjects exam.

When subtracting a mixed number, convert the mixed number to an improper fraction then subtract.

Here is another example of how cancellation can make things simple.

A math teacher was asked by a student: “What is mathematics good for?” The teacher replied: “This question makes me sick. Like when you show somebody the Grand Canyon for the first time, and he asks you, `What’s it good for?’ What would you do? Why, you would kick the guy off the cliff”.
