Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s budget proposal cuts state funding to schools by 10 percent.

The latest school districts to collapse under the pressure are Poway Unified and Carlsbad.

The Poway Unified School District may need to lay-off more than 100 teachers in an attempt to cut $15.5 million from its budget. The school is also considering cuts to school programs and an increase in class sizes.

Some of the programs that may be scaled back include music, athletics, transportation and special education. If the district goes through with the layoffs, as many as five students could be added to each classroom.

In the Carlsbad School District from principals to teachers, dozens of the 187 certified employees are on the verge of losing their jobs with the Carlsbad School District.

District trustees met in city council chambers Wednesday evening to discuss which teachers would be at the receiving end of the layoff notices, set for March 15. The trustees have authorized the layoffs, but the details are still being worked out, according to officials.
