School Accountability Report Card (SARC)

Most people do not know that California public schools are required to provide information about themselves to the community. This is a great research tool for anyone looking in California for a teaching job. Before I get to using this tool, here is some history on SARC.
SARC Legislation
Proposition 98 – Approved by California voters on November 8, 1988: “…is the intent of the People of California to ensure that our schools spend money where it is most needed. Therefore, this Act will require every local school board to prepare a School Accountability Report Card to guarantee accountability for the dollars spent.”
Added Section 8.5(e) to Article XVI of the California Constitution, which requires that “(a)ny school district maintaining an elementary or secondary school shall develop and cause to be prepared an annual audit accounting for such funds and shall adopt a School Accountability Report Card for each school.”
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
The No Child Left Behind Act expanded on the existing SARC system by requiring each state to produce an annual report card that includes information on high school graduation rates, teacher qualifications, other indicators used in each state’s definition of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), and the AYP status of all schools and districts in the state.
