The combination formula is:
Example: How many combinations are there of 8 things taken 4 at a time?
Notice that in this example problem, order does not matter. The number we plug in for n is 8 because there are 8 things. The number we plug in for k is 4 because we are taking only 4 things at a time. We can now plug these values into our combinations formula:
Notice that both the numerator and denominator have the number of factors indicated by the lower index, which in this case is 4. The numerator has four factors beginning with the upper index 8 and going backwards. The denominator has four factors beginning with 1 and going forward.
Example: Write all the combinations of abcdef taken 1 at a time.
