You need to know about World Religions if you are studying for the CSET English or the CSET Multiple Subjects exams. Religion drives the belief system of billions of people around the world. It not only shows up in World literature, but it will show up in your classroom. The California Department of Education takes the respect of various ethnic groups and their religion seriously. Being tolerant of people with different religious beliefs comes from an understanding of the various religions around the world. Having just a small knowledge of various belief systems and cultures allows the California teacher to conduct her work in a more efficient and respectful manner.

Founder: Siddhartha Gautama, called the Buddha, in the 4th or 5th century B.C. in India.
Central Figure: Budda = enlightened one
Number of God(s): None
Holy Book(s): The most important are the Tripitaka, the Mahayana Sutras, Tantra, and Zen texts.
Teachings: The Four Noble Truths – suffering exists, desire makes us suffer, end desires = end suffering, follow 8-fold path to end desires. When enlightened, one reaches nirvana, no more reincarnation.
Locality: Many Asian countries.
