Blending

Blending is a crucial step in learning to read fluently. It is important to give instruction in blending to provide students a tool to use when they decode words. Students know the sounds for each letter or group of letters and are now able to blend the sounds into words. Blending is a skill that needs practice.

Use knowledge of consonants, consonant blends, digraphs including sh, wh ch, th to decode and spell words.

Blends: A pair of consonants that represents two individual sounds.
bl – black br – brown sc – scat sp – spot
cl – clue cr – cry scr – screen squ – squeak
fl – flap dr – draw sm – small st – stump
gl – glass fr – friend sn – snow sw – swing
pl – play gr – ground
