Teacher candidates studying for the CSET English exam should know what phonics is and how it relates to language acquisition and development.

Phonics Instruction

Phonics is instructional activities designed to teach reading and/or spelling through an emphasis upon the relationship of speech sounds to the letters and letter combinations that represent them.

Graphophonemic Knowledge

Graphophonemic knowledge is the recognition of the letters of the alphabet and the understanding of sound-symbol relationships.

In order to link phonemes with alphabetic letters, students need to know the names and sounds of the letters of the alphabet.

The letters taught at the beginning should have a high-frequency usage rate for reading and writing (for example, t and r are used more frequently than k and v.)

The letters taught at a particular time should not be too much alike in sound or written formation in order to avoid confusion (for example, m and n would not be taught together since they are similar in sound and formation.)

During individualized and small group instruction a few sounds should be taught fully to mastery before introducing additional sounds.

Consonants:
b - book j - job n - new s - sit or was x - xylophone, tax, exam
d - dance k - king p - party t - top or nation y - yes
f - funny l - lemon qu - queen v - violin z - zebra
h - heart m - money r - roll w - water

Other Consonants:
c - cent - city - cycle
