Obtaining California Teacher Credentials

If you want to teach in California, you need to get your teaching credentials. There are three basic types of California teaching credentials: Single Subject Credential, Multiple Subject Credential, and the Education Specialist Credential. The Single Subject Credential allows a teacher to teach in a classroom where only one subject is taught such as the junior high and high school levels. The Multiple Subject Credential allows a teacher to teach in a classroom where more than one subject is taught such as the elementary school level.

The Education Specialist Credential is for teachers who want to work with children and adults with disabilities. The degree of disability further defined by earning a Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe Credential.

Preliminary Teacher Credential

First you must earn a preliminary credential and then complete a two-year induction program. All beginning teachers start out with a preliminary credential.

Minimum Requirements for a Preliminary Credential

1. A baccalaureate degree in a field other than professional education from a regionally accredited college or university.

2. An approved program of professional preparation, including supervised student teaching and passing teacher performance assessments.

3. Passing the basic skills competency test (CBEST).

4. Demonstration of subject matter competency in the credential being authorized. For single subject candidates, this can be achieved either by passing the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET), or by completing a state-approved subject matter preparation program.
