computer is just too important for you to be a cheap-skate here. FREE anti-virus programs are usually FREE for a reason: they are not good enough to sell. But the FREE offer is too tempting for some of you and even though I warned you, you will download and install one anyway.

5. Restrict Access To Your Computer

I can not tell you how many times a teacher candidate was using her computer to prepare for the CSET and then her husband used the computer and went to an adult site, caught a virus, and her computer crashed before the exam. Even with the best firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware programs, adult websites can sometimes still penetrate your security system. You need to explain to your husband (and anyone who has access to your computer) how important passing this test is to your family income. You need to change or set a Windows log-on password that only you know and completely eliminate anyone else from using your computer while you are studying for your CSET exam. Explain to your husband that you understand this is a hardship on him, but having to studying for this exam is a hardship on you as well and that strong families sometimes have to suffer together. If your husband truly loves you and is supportive of your efforts to improve the family income, he will moan but ultimately accept your decision or simply buy himself a computer. Assure your husband that you will tell him the Windows log-on password once you are done studying for your exam and make sure to give him plenty of appreciation for his understanding.

To set a log-in password in Windows XP, click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, and User Accounts. Turn off the Guest Account. If you already have a User Account setup, select the Change an account (to change your existing password). If you don’t have a User Account and your Windows simply boots straight to your desktop, click Create a new account and make sure you also look at Change the way users log on and off.

Here is an excellent educational video from an I.T. insider (Christine Beatty) on viruses, spyware, worms, trojan horses, and other types of attacks and how you can protect yourself. Even if your computer is protected, I still recommend you watch this video.
