What Is An Improper Fraction?
An improper fraction has a numerator (top number) larger than or equal to the denominator (bottom number).
Examples:
5/4 or 4/3
Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Fractions
To convert an improper fraction to a mixed fraction, follow these steps:
1. Divide the numerator by the denominator.
2. Write down the whole number answer
3. Then write down any remainder above the denominator.
Example: Convert 5/4 to a mixed fraction.
Divide: 5 ÷ 4 = 1 with a remainder of 1
Write down the 1 and then write down the remainder (1) above the denominator (4), like this:
