National Board Certification


Great status comes with a National Board Certification. Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review. NBPTS offers 25 certificates that cover a variety of subject areas and student developmental levels. Not only that, but most states offer higher pay for National Board certified teachers (NBCTs). In some states, NBCTs can earn substantially more pay (e.g., a 12% salary supplement in North Carolina, and a $7,500 increase in South Carolina). NBCTs who are employed by a California public school district or charter school and who are assigned to teach at least 50 percent time in a high-priority school for four years are eligible for $20,000. The award is paid in $5,000 payments for four consecutive years. Districts must verify, each year, that teachers have met the percentage requirement before funds can be released to make each $5,000 payment. Even if you do not teach in a high-priority school, most California school districts will give you a $1,450 raise.

Whatever path you decide to take to become a California teacher, you should go to the CTC website at http://www.ctc.ca.gov and make sure you have met all the requirements before going on a job search.
