In the United States, each state has a different method for teacher certification. All states require you to get a bachelor’s degree, usually in education or in the subject matter you want to teach. Most states require additional training of some kind and usually a passing grade on a certification exam. In the case of a teacher shortage, a state will relax certification requirements in order to meet the more immediate need for teachers.

How To Become a California Teacher

In California, there are two types of certificates: preliminary and Professional Clear Credential. The preliminary certification is valid for only 5 years. The Professional Clear Credential is renewable after five years.

The steps on how to become a teacher and getting a preliminary credential to teach in California are:

1. Obtain a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university
2. Complete a teacher preparation program including student teaching
3. Meet basic skill requirements by passing the CBEST and CSET Multiple Subject examination for grades K – 6, or the CSET Single Subject examination for grades 7 – 12. One may also have passed a basic skills exam from another state that has a reciprocity agreement in place with California. One may avoid the CSET Single Subject examination by completing an approved single subject program to show subject matter competency.
4. Complete courses in developing English Language skills, the U.S. Constitution, and computer technology.
