independent clause) and depends on that other element for its meaning. The subordinate clause is created by a subordinating conjunction or dependent word.

Adverb clauses are dependent clauses that tell us what is going on in the main (independent) clause.

Examples:

1. When the movie is over, we’ll go shopping.
The adverb clause is “When the movie is over”.

2. I didn’t call her because I’m angry.
The adverb clause is “because I’m angry”.

Adverbial Phrase

A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or a pronoun. This noun or pronoun is called the “object of the preposition.” Prepositional phrases that function as adverbs are called adverbial phrases.

Examples:

1. I saw the movie before I left for Fresno.
The adverbial phrase is “before I left for Fresno”.

2. They lived in America during the war.
The adverbial phrase is “during the war.”
