In general, shorter adverbial phrases precede longer adverbial phrases, regardless of content. In the case both adverbial phrases are about the same length, usually the more specific adverbial phrase comes first. In the sentence “My great grandfather was born in a sod house on the plains of northern Oklahoma,” there are two adverbial phrases: “in a sod house” and “on the plains”. The correct answer is D.
