Examples

1. John licked chocolate ice cream off his chin.
The concrete noun is “ice cream”.


2. The secretary handed the files to the clerk.
The concrete nouns are “secretary”, “files”, and “clerk”.

3. Her friendship what important.
The abstract noun is “friendship”.

4. Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.
The abstract nouns are “love” and “desire”.

Countable Nouns

Countable nouns are things that can be counted.

Examples

1. My cat is playing.
The countable noun is “cat” because you can count cats.

2. I like apples.
The countable noun is “apples” because you can count apples. Note that countable nouns can be plural.

3. There are three people here.
The countable noun is “people” because people can be counted.

Non-Countable Nouns

A non-countable noun (or mass noun) is a noun which does not have a plural form.

Examples

1. The furniture is in the middle of the room.

The non-countable noun is “furniture” because you can not make it plural.

2. I saw the milk spill.
The non-countable noun is “milk” because you can not make it plural.

Collective Nouns

A collective noun is a word used to define a group of people, animals, inanimate things, or concepts.

Examples

1. The flock of sheep spends most of its time feeding.
The collective noun is “flock”.

2. The jury is taking along time.
The collective noun is “jury”.

3. The class was angry at the teacher.
The collective noun is “class”.
