The Rocky Coast is made up of five mountain ranges.

1. Partly in Oregon, the Klamath Mountains form a rugged, forested area rising to 9,000 feet.

2. The Cascade Range consists of volcanic peaks and lava flows. Mt. Shasta is a dormant volcano with a 14,162 foot peak.

3. The Coast Ranges run parallel to the Pacific Coast in a complex series of ridges and valleys.

4. The Transverse Ranges travel west to east, or transverse from the other coast ranges.

5. The Peninsular Range is dominated by occasional peaks and rolling mountain terrain.

California is surrounded by three deserts.

1. The Great Basin contains Death Valley, which, at 282 feet below sea level, is the lowest point in the United States.

2. The Mojave Desert has many flat plains separated by low but rugged ranges.

3. The Colorado Desert is a low and flat depression ringed by mountain ranges.
