This is part 7 in our series on the binomial theorem for teacher candidates studying for the CSET Math examination.

Now let’s look at expanding two expressions at the same time.

Example:

Expand and simplify (3x + 1)4 + (3x - 1)4

We have a power of 4 so we use the 4th row in Pascal’s Triangle (1, 4, 6, 4, 1) to expand each expression.

                       1   3   3   1
                     1   4   6   4   1
                   1   5  10   10  5   1
                 1   6  15  20   15  6   1
               1   7  21  35   35  21  7   1
                             .

                             .

Expanding fractions are not that difficult.

Example:

One day, Jesus said to his disciples:
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like y = 3x2 + 8x - 9.”
A man who had just joined the disciples looked very confused and asked Peter: “What, on Earth, does he mean by that?” Peter smiled. “Don’t worry. It’s just another one of his parabolas.”
