Binomial Theorem Part 3

This is part 3 in our series on the binomial theorem for teacher candidates studying for the CSET Math examination.
I’m going to use the binomial theorem to expand the problem below in a slightly different way. Math is like website design, there is always more than one way to achieve the desired outcome. The binomial theorem certainly fits this cliche.
Example:
Using the binomial theorem, expand (x + y)5

A little girl came home from school and said to her mother, “Mommy, today in school I was punished for something that I didn’t do.”
The mother exclaimed, “That’s terrible! I’m going to have a talk with your teacher about this … by the way, what was it that you didn’t do?”
The little girl replied, “My homework.”
